Increasing Youths' Awareness of Their Fundamental Human Rights

At the Foundation for Societal Empowerment and Rejuvenation (FOSER), we are committed to educating and empowering youths to understand and exercise their fundamental human rights as entrenched in the Nigerian constitution. One of our key outcomes,  focuses on increasing awareness among young people about their constitutional rights, facilitated through the Know Your Right (KYR) project.

In collaboration with the Kings Leodews Initiatives, a valued consortium partner, we organized a comprehensive lecture aimed at revitalizing youth groups and enhancing their understanding of the functions and limitations of constituted authorities. This initiative is part of our broader effort to reduce police brutality and foster a more just and equitable society.

The lecture provided participants with critical insights into the roles and responsibilities of various constituted authorities as outlined by the Nigerian Constitution. Participants learned to identify and understand the functions of bodies such as the Nigerian Army, Police, Courts of Law, Parliament, Heads of Institutions and Traditional Rulers, the President's Office, Ministers, Governors, Commissioners, and Local Government Chairmen. Recognizing these authorities and their constitutional limitations is crucial for safeguarding citizens' rights and ensuring smooth administration.

A significant portion of the lecture focused on the powers and limitations of the Nigerian Police Force, as stipulated in the Police Act 1976 and the amended 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Given the KYR project's emphasis on reducing police brutality, this knowledge is particularly pertinent. Participants were educated on their rights as free citizens, including the right to refuse to answer police questions without cause and the proper ways to approach and interact with police officers to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

This initiative has empowered our youth participants with the knowledge to recognize and assert their constitutional rights confidently. By understanding the limitations of the police force and other authorities, they are better equipped to navigate interactions with these bodies safely and effectively.

FOSER is dedicated to continuing our efforts to educate and empower communities. By increasing awareness of fundamental human rights, we aim to build a society where justice, equity, and respect for individual rights are paramount.
